The
program was to remodel an existing family room and design a new outdoor living
room in the rear yard. The design of the outdoor space first establishes an
axial relationship with the existing house. Architectural elements are then
arranged asymmetrically about this axis to create a dynamic spatial composition.
Specific elements include a cast-in-place concrete bench and fire pit, a water
fall and reflecting pool integrated with the existing garage that create a featured
sculptural element, and a steel trellis with white fiberglass canvas curtains
to provide dramatic enclosure and daytime shade from the south and southwest
sun. River rock and concrete flagstone made from pieces of the demolished driveway
and black slate are used as exterior paving. The slate is used in the family
room to reinforce the integration of interior and exterior space. Bamboo is
used to define space in specific ways: a giant clumping, striated variety becomes
a sculptural object and is located to provide vertical counterpoint to the otherwise
horizontal emphasis of the space. A running, black bamboo is used to define
a corner space and screen the neighboring property.
